USAID has long been investing in improving education outcomes around the world, yet the knowledge acquired and the true impact of its programs are still not fully understood by the broader development audience. Advances are needed in various areas – from organizational effectiveness and staff expertise to communications and knowledge management – to ensure the investments achieve their intended impact.
The Education Performance Improvement, Communications, and Knowledge (EPIC) project is a five-year program of support services managed by the Education Policy and Planning Division (EPP) in the E3 Office of Education. The project was designed to improve education sector impact, programming, measurement, management and performance by strengthening 1) organizational effectiveness; 2) professional development and training; 3) internal and external communications and outreach; and 4) knowledge management uptake and brokering. As a subcontractor on this project, Making Cents International has been providing knowledge management support for research collaboration and knowledge sharing as well as event management services for various learning events.
Key activities to date have included:
Building Evidence in Education Secretariat. Making Cents has been providing knowledge management and logistical support to the Building Evidence in Education (BE2) Donor Working Group, a group of about 40 member organizations, including bilateral donors such as USAID and Department for International Development (DFID), foundations, multilaterals, UN organizations and their associated institutes, and two networks: the Interagency Network for Education in Emergencies and the Youth Employment Funders Group. Serving as its Secretariat, Making Cents has managed the production and dissemination of BE2 evidence products and guidance notes; organized member meetings for research collaboration, knowledge sharing, and presentations of latest education research insights; supported the group in proposing, organizing, and managing panels and workshops at large global conferences focused on education; and maintained a members-only website where presentations from member meetings are shared.
E3 Global Education Conference 2020. Making Cents is managing logistics and communications for EPIC’s Global Education Conference (GEC), which will demonstrate the U.S. Government’s commitment to international education and present an opportunity to advance global diplomatic and development leadership on pressing international education challenges.
Global Book Alliance 2019. Making Cents provided direct administrative, logistical, and coordination support to the Global Book Alliance (GBA) advisor team and communications specialist.
mEducation Symposium 2018 – 2019. Making Cents worked closely with USAID in providing significant event support and logistics for the 2018 and 2019 mEducation Alliance Symposium and Steering Committee Meetings, including communication and knowledge management, fundraising, agenda setting, attendee coordination, and onsite logistics. Our fundraising efforts for the 2018 and 2019 Symposia brought in a combined $650,000 for the event.
